  6. ever popular National Geographic specials conclude their season

  10.     AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS (NBC, April 16-18, 9 p.m. EDT).
  11. Phileas Fogg, that globe-trotting Victorian gent, is back in a
  12. remake of the Oscar-winning 1956 film based on Jules Verne's novel.
  13. Pierce Brosnan, Lee Remick and Peter Ustinov head the proverbial
  14. all-star cast.

  16.     A DEADLY SILENCE (ABC, April 16, 9 p.m. EDT). One of the most
  17. tragic consequences of child abuse is recounted in this docudrama
  18. about a Long Island, N.Y., teenager who hired a friend to kill the
  19. father who had molested her for years.

  23.     ROSANNE CASH: HITS 1979-1989 (Columbia). She's got a
  24. half-past-4-in-the-morning voice, and a knowing way with a song
  25. that can make any listener wish the night would go on forever.

  27.     ELVIS COSTELLO: SPIKE (Warner Bros.). God's Comic, Stalin
  28. Malone, Miss Macbeth: even the titles sting. The songs are like an
  29. acid bath; no quarter given or expected.

  31.     THE AMHERST SAXOPHONE QUARTET: BACH ON SAX (MCA Classics).
  32. Purists, beware! Your prejudice against unorthodox instrumentation
  33. could be shattered by this surprising set of Bach adaptations that
  34. has nothing gimmicky about it but the concept.

  36.     ANDRES SEGOVIA: FIVE CENTURIES OF THE SPANISH GUITAR (MCA
  37. Classics). The reviver and master of the instrument as you have
  38. never heard him before. Twenty-six digitally reissued performances,
  39. dating from 1952 to 1968, drawn from the works of ten Spanish
  40. composers.

  44.     A PRAYER FOR OWEN MEANY by John Irving (Morrow; $19.95). In
  45. this inventive, indignant novel, a boisterous cast and a spirited
  46. story line propel a sawed-off Christly caricature through two
  47. decades of U.S. foreign policy debacles.

  49.     THE JOY LUCK CLUB by Amy Tan (Putnam; $18.95). A bright,
  50. sharp-flavored first novel on the subject of growing up ethnic in
  51. the U.S. The topic sounds familiar, but the Chinese spice added to
  52. this old recipe is invigorating and refreshingly true.

  54.     FIRE DOWN BELOW by William Golding (Farrar, Straus & Giroux;
  55. $17.95). The last leaf of a trilogy begun back in 1980. An
  56. arrogant, young 19th century Englishman survives seaborne hardships
  57. to arrive in Australia -- and at some condition of self-knowledge.

  61.     THE WINTER'S TALE. Mandy Patinkin, Christopher Reeve, Alfre
  62. Woodard and Diane Venora top an impressive if imperfect
  63. off-Broadway version of Shakespeare's fable.

  65.     JOE TURNER'S COME AND GONE. Director Claude Purdy's backyard
  66. realism suits August Wilson's lyric text, at the Los Angeles
  67. Theater Center.

  71.     NELL BLAINE: RECENT OILS AND WORKS ON PAPER, Fischbach Gallery,
  72. New York City. Forty-eight works by a premier American artist whose
  73. spontaneous brushstrokes and brilliant colors enrobe nature in a
  74. tender intimacy. Through April 26.

  76.     LIKE A ONE-EYED CAT: PHOTOGRAPHS BY LEE FRIEDLANDER 1956-1987,
  77. Seattle Art Museum. Surprising perspectives on everyday images --
  78. street scenes, jazz musicians, empty motel rooms, public monuments
  79. -- by a modern American master. Through May 7.

  82. Washington. Highlights of the collection built up by British
  83. connoisseurs over two centuries at Cambridge University's
  84. Fitzwilliam, including paintings by Titian, Rubens and Delacroix,
  85. manuscripts, ceramics, sculpture and decorative arts. Through June

  89. Underappreciated in the modern era, Reni is restored in this
  90. choice, 50-painting show to the high rank earlier centuries
  91. accorded him as luminous colorist and elegant classical stylist.

  96.     HIGH HOPES. A dotty old woman fights to keep her home amid the
  97. crush of gentrification. Working with a cast that has helped
  98. improvise its roles, British director Mike Leigh creates a group
  99. portrait of characters who live, breathe and squawk their wayward
  100. humanity on the margins of Thatcher's England.

  102.     ADVENTURES OF BARON MUNCHAUSEN. Lovers waltz in midair, a
  103. servant outruns a bullet, and the King of the Moon (Robin Williams)
  104. loses his head in this wonder-filled fantasy from Terry Gilliam.
